Question for the [REG]s with newer rigs…
Does anyone have any experience with Vista yet? And namely how well it does with games, and is DX10 as much of a difference as the screenshots make it look? I understand that Vista is a RAM hog, but I haven’t been able to get DX10 to work with my winXP Pro, and I have tried a couple of packages I found that supposedly worked for others.
I was thinking about grabbing another set of Ballistix to jump to 4gb, then grabbing the 64bit version of Vista Home, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had any luck with it. I’ve read boatloads of complaints around, but you always hear more complainers than praisers. I may even buy a matching 8800GTS 640mb and go SLI, if I need to in order to get the detail that I am seeing in these DX10 screenshots.

Im the wrong guy to ask on tht shit!!!!!
I run a core 2 extreme, 680i mobo, 4 gigs of dominator ram, evga 8800 gtx, and 32 bit vista. I think dx10 was overated at launch but more games are incorporating it. I have had no major issues with vista. I didnt have much luck running duel cards, tho they were slightly different. I would go with the new 280gtx or drop down to 9800gtx and keep the heat down. If you can afford it, I would go with 64 bit version. Again I have had no issues with vista. Good luck…..
Vista works fine. People call it a RAM hog because it keeps frequently-used programs in RAM – to me, that’s “using” the RAM, not “hogging” it. If you’ve got 2gb or more RAM, don’t worry. If you don’t have that, get it. This stuff is cheap! Turn UAC off, and it is essentially XP with DX10, better memory usage, a slicker interface, and a couple nifty-but-relatively-unimportant upgrades.
Here’s the real question for me – is it worth actually spending money on over XP? At the moment, my answer is no. If you need a 64-bit OS anyways, you may as well grab it (XP is reaching it’s End-of-Life), but I wouldn’t spend money on it just for the giggles.
