UPDATED: What do you guys think of this?
[UPDATED] WooooHoooo! I actually WON! Can you believe it!??!?!! I was totally floored when I saw my name on the winners list for this. I still am. Can’t wait to see that shiny new Nvidia 8800GTS at my door! Many many thanks to everyone who took the time to go vote for me! I’ll definitely have some stuff for sale once I get this card, so I’ll post that soon… Going to upgrade to better suit the 8800 architecture…
[ CONTEST RESULTS ]
They’re running a contest to win one of three Nvidia 8800 cards, asking for people to come up with desktop images for Quakewars… Here was an idea I had, put together from numerous screenshots, etc. that I found, plus the ETQW fan pack. This compiled image doesn’t exist… I made it from different images, and the background image of the scorched road/valley scene.
Here’s the contest site: SITE
Go throw some votes my way if you can… I’d love to snag an 8800…

The beta testing call has been closed since March 6 I think… 48 hours after opening it or something, from what I read… blew them away…
Congrats on the win Skirmish! You didn’t just place, you got the gold! and in my opinion CRUSHED the competition!
Your art was ridiculously better than the competition… and the fact that it wasn’t just a screenshot, but a composite image is a testament to your skill. Take pride in your win – I know I do!

Note: This drive uses eSATA (external SATA), and comes complete with an adapter to use eSATA as soon as you get it. eSATA is much faster than USB 2.0, and will be just as fast as if the computer were inside your computer. However, the enclosure also allows you to use USB, so it is compatible with your friend’s/wife’s/grandma’s computer as well.
Remember, the space really does come in handy. I’m using 300gb of space right now, and I’m just getting warmed up. I used to have around 2 terabytes of storage, with 75% of it used. Go to a LAN party, and you can easily fill a 500gb hard drive with goodies. Honestly, LAN parties are the best way to get stuff – it’s almost always sorted and complete, there’s tons of variety to pick from, and it’s a completely undetectable method because it’s all done on an internal network. Not to mention, the speeds are blazing fast compared to downloading across the internet.

2GB of RAM is a must-have for any modern game. 4GB is more than you can use unless you have either 1)an 64-bit operating system (and you’d know if you had one or not), or 2)a program that allows you to create a RAM drive (use the RAM to mimic a hard drive). If you don’t have one of these two, then you probably want to stick to 2GB for now (just because of the cost).
If you have $300 burning a hole in your pocket, switch to Vista 64-bit and buy 8gb of RAM. If you do this, you will have an un-godly fast machine.
Otherwise, buy this set:
Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 667: $74 shipped

Seriously, 2gb definitely is needed in modern games (ie: BF2, BF2142, and…. Quake Wars!) Maybe this is blasphemy, but I would ditch your 512mb sticks – hell, see if you can return them!
Anyway, that’s my $0.02.
I agree with Seal in that 2gb of GOOD RAM is a must for todays games, and that anything over 2gb is overkill for most people’s computers, unless you are dealing with gargantuan files in photoshop or working with huge videos… But I am definitely more of a Corsair guy myself… had really good luck with the XMS and Value Select series, although I would definitely recommend the XMS for gaming.
And who needed the external hard drive? Certainly couldn’t have been sarge, as we snagged him a 320gb internal… That should be more than enough…
For you Corsair whores out there:
